Since 1 July 2013, Croatia is a member of the European Union. Accordingly, the provisions of Regulation (EC) no 883/2004 of 29 April 2004 on the coordination of social security systems have become applicable to Croatia. In addition, Regulations (EC) no 987/2009 (application regulation), no 1231/2010 (extension to third country nationals) and no 465/2012 (amendments) have become applicable.
The agreements between the European Union and Switzerland and between the European Union and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, however, have not yet been adapted.
Assignments from and to Croatia that started before 1 July 2013 and which are extended after this date will simply continue. This means that the assignment period performed before 1 July 2013 will be taken into account when determining the total assignment duration (i.e. in principle maximum 5 years based on Article 16 of Regulation (EC) no 883/2004).
